I struggled with irregular periods since 2018, which led to a PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) diagnosis a year later and being put on the pill for the first time ever. This made me feel like the worst version of myself, sleep deprived, constantly down and wondering what is wrong with me. Yes, artificial hormones can do this to you, but everyone’s experience is different. I decided to switch to the Mirena (hormonal) coil. For three years, I felt pretty good on it, but during my Nutritional Therapy education, I came to a realisation: I had no idea how my natural cycle functioned. Also, I was starting to think more and more about having a baby and wondering if it would be possible to naturally conceive.
I took my Mirena out at the end of March 2023, and I thought I started to have my period a month after. But this wasn’t the case. I had 4 bleeds that didn’t feel like I was menstruating at all, they were painless and symptomless. After doing my own research, I turned to the healing power of nutrition and increased my magnesium, zinc and omega-3 intake, all of which support hormone production and cycle health. My (official) period came back in November, 7 months after the Mirena, which is within the norm. It can take up to a year for your cycle to normalise. In May 2024, I got pregnant! After 6 cycles, I got pregnant - I couldn’t believe it. I went from irregular periods, pills and Mirena to pregnancy.
What helped me this time was stress and alcohol reduction. I moved to a quieter place, I started doing yoga every week, uncomfortably began running (it is a love-hate relationship) and I only had a few drinks a week. I went on a yoga retreat in April that motivated me to do more breathwork in the morning. Together, all these healthy habits contributed to balancing and optimising my health.
